Capains Report

Captains report Gold Cup – 1st December 2011

I normally play with the host club Captain, however the Strand Club Captain and the Strand Club President where both competing in the Gary Player finals. My fourball therefore comprised of the Vice –President, Alf Duncan (my Vice Captain 2004), Johann Swart (my Captain 2010) and Tony Runkel (my proposer). I had a wonderful day and it was fitting to spend my last moments as Boland Captain with them.

Once again the day was well supported and the course and facilities where in great
condition and the staff at Strand where as welcoming as they always are. Thanks must go to the manager Corne Blom for the manner in which he always looks after us.
Congratulations to all the monthly prize winners and especially those that walked away with all the silverware at Gold Cup. Once again the wind blew on the day with the result that our pick 3 pool was not won, again, it now stands at over R16000.00.
Thanks once again to our wonderful “Green Machine” for their tireless efforts and their patience.

Gentlemen, please remember to support our sponsors, both National and Local, without them we would not be able to do the good work we do.
I would like to thank you all, again for making my year as Captain such a memorable one. I look forward to seeing you all in Hermanus, where you will be greeted by our Captain, Johan Visagie.

Have a wonderful Christmas break and I wish you and your families a prosperous New Year.
Regards
Peter

Golforama

Dear fellow Bolanders,

The Sunshine Tour is hosting two tournaments in January and February at Fancourt for which they require Golforama Support.

The VOLVO Champions Tournament will be held at The Links at Fancourt 19 to 22 January. The tournament is the “Grande Finale” of the European Tour, crowning the European Champion of Champions. Only players who won tournaments during 2011 and players who have more than ten career wins on tour qualify to play. The field size will thus be about 45.

This is a full on European Tour event and not a Sunshine Tour event. The tournament has been moved here because of the problems in Bahrain.

The annual DIDATA TOURNAMENT on the Sunshine Tour will be held at Fancourt from 16 to 19 February 2012.

Boland has been approached to assist Southern Cape with Golforama duties for both these tournaments.

May we ask you to please consider joining a Boland contingent to spend one (or both) of the weekends at Fancourt.

Accommodation will be arranged and travel and meal allowance is in the budget.

Please indicate your willingness to assist by return mail to rian@psgkonsult.co.za.

Kind regards,

Johan Visagie

SOUTH AFRICANS CAN BE PROUD AS IRELAND CROWNED INTERNATIONAL PAIRS WORLD CHAMPIONS

It had to happen one of these years and oh boy, it certainly happened this year!!  Since 2005 the weather has not had any significant impact on the International Pairs golf tournament World Finals; with one small exception in 2007 at St Andrews Bay when the second round was disrupted by a thunder storm.  This year, however, it seemed that Mother Nature had decided to present a serious meteorological challenge to the golfers and it was tough – so very tough!  This was without doubt the most difficult World Finals by a long way and when the players ventured out for the practice round it was cold, windy, rainy conditions that they faced on the Carrick course at Loch Lomond.

The golf course is a challenging layout that undulates its way up from the shore of the Loch into the hills and then wends its way back down to the links-like finishing holes and when completely dry it is not a simple stroll so with fairways sodden it was a hard walk.  The South Africans all had a real practice round in that they not only got to know the course but also familiarised themselves with playing in layers of clothing whilst managing umbrellas and keeping clubs and gloves dry – and spirits high!  Well if the competitors thought the practice round had been tough, then they would have a rude awakening on the first competition day when dawn broke grey, cold and rainy – with snow on the nearby Ben Lomond Mountain.  In true South African spirit, however, the three pairs attacked the challenge before them with varying degrees of success.

As the round progressed so the conditions worsened until the Tournament Director took the decision to reduce the first round to 9 holes.  This was absolutely the right decision considering that the last 5 holes were effectively unplayable and the players with late tee times would most certainly have been disadvantaged.

Day two dawned colder but with a glimpse of blue above and although the course was still sodden, it was fully playable thanks to the remarkable efforts of the green keeping staff who had been working since 4:00am.  The rain did fall during the day and the wind did blow and the chill factor remained but with the World Championship title up for grabs, the teams persisted.

Melville Muir and Willie Stokes can be exceptionally proud of their 3rd place, which is the highest ever finishing position by a South African pair on the World Final leader board with the previous best having been 4th on three occasions.  All three South African teams can be extremely proud of their performances and the way in which they represented all South African amateur club golfers!

In the end it was All-Ireland Gaelic football players Mick Galvin and Jason Sherlock who, having turned their hands to another sport, conquered the fairways in Scotland and claimed a dramatic victory at the 2011 International Pairs World Final.  Galvin and Sherlock held their nerve under intense pressure to beat the Chilean pair of Gabriel Morgan Searle and Rodrigo San Martin Ribera at the second hole of a sudden death play-off and in doing so they became the first Irish players in the tournament’s history to be crowned world champions.  It was a close run thing as Searle and Ribera pushed them all the way after both teams had finished with 53 Stableford points after 27 holes and having halved the first hole of sudden death in par-fours, Galvin and Sherlock looked to be in pole position to close out victory as they played The Carrick’s 407-yard 18th hole for a second time.  With their opponents in trouble off the tee, Galvin, who is now manager of St Oliver Plunketts Gaelic football team with Sherlock one of his players, found the green in two but then proceeded to three-putt from 25 feet and their win was only confirmed when Searle’s three-foot putt for a bogey lipped out.

“That is the most nervous I have ever been on a golf course,” said 11-handicapper Sherlock, who also played for Shamrock Rovers and the Republic of Ireland’s under-21 football side.
“I have played in a lot of big sporting occasions but I preferred playing in front of 80,000 people at Croke Park than going through that.”

Galvin, who plays off six, added: “Jason and I have known each other for years and we played very well in the second round.  We knew if we beat the Scottish guys we would stand a chance but the Chileans played some great golf and it was a bit of a struggle to finish things off at the end.  It’s a humbling experience to play for your country on a world stage and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.  It’s a great event and we have met some wonderful people from all over the world.  We can’t celebrate too much, though, as we have a game at the weekend!”

16TH November 2011.

NEWSLETTER – NOVEMBER 2011

With less than 4 months to go to the start of the 47th National Tournament, we are proud to advise that all systems are go go go for what is going to be an unforgettable tournament.
Port Shepstone Country Club have been pulling out all the stops to ensure a memorable week of golf.In an amazing feat of engineering the 11th has been transformed from a quagmire to a dry and stable fairway. This will however come at a cost to all those that play her, as to raise the fairway, a series of dams have been introduced. The stroke 17 should now come in at stoke 5 to 9. Congratulations to all involved, Port Shepstone promises to be in pristine condition come March 10th.

Accommodation.

May I impress on all concerned that require accommodation, to make their bookings timeously. Hotels and resorts in the area will not hold on to their accommodation indefinitely.

Players Tournament
.
I regret to advise,  that in a decision taken at the last management meeting held in the Lowveld last weekend, the decision was made to cancel the Players Tournament. The decision was not taken lightly but the general feeling was that, with the main tournament drawing players from the Players to fill gaps in their field, there would not be enough players left to hold a Players Tournament.
There is a possibility however that a tournament separate from the National Tournament may still be organized. Once details of this tournament have been assessed they will be relayed to the members.

Ladies Tours.

The details of the ladies tours have not changed since the last newsletter but are included in this letter for those who did not receive the first one.
Our ladies tour co-coordinator and his band of merry helpers have been busy putting together 3 tours where you will be pampered and treated to 3 days of fun, laughter, good food and an experience to remember for years to come. Entry fee R300.00 per tour.
Tour 1 – Gorgeous Sunday – Oribi Gorge, Lake Eland
Tour 2 - Winning Tuesday – Beaver Creek Coffee farm and Wild Coast Sun
Tour 3 – Surfs up Thursday – N S R I headquarters, Bali lunch and general chill out.
We would also like to introduce some Ladies Golf for those ladies who would like to experience our South Coast courses. These will be held on the alternate days to the ladies tour days, please go into the website for more detail.
This will be decided upon once the registration forms have been returned and if the number of participants warrants it.
Please go to the Southern Natal Nomads website at www.snatalnomads.co.za and follow the “Nationals 2012” link to see full details of the tours.
So come on Nomads, encourage your better halves to join you, on what is going to be an extremely memorable week.

Entertainment and Dinners.

The entertainment for the week has been finalized and you can be assured of world class action night after night in the marquee.
The dinner menus have been designed to satisfy the most avid entrepreneur with 3 course meals being served on the Sunday, Wednesday and Friday and tantalizing snacks being served the balance of the evenings.

Transport

Transport will be provided from King Shaka International Airport, but due to the turnaround time needed to carry people to and from the airport, this will have to be very strictly controlled.
There will also be a cost implication, as transport to and from the airport has not been allowed for in the budget. More details will follow in the next letter.
The coordinating committee of 2012 wishes all Nomads and their families a blessed Xmas and a healthy and prosperous new year.

Look out for the next newsletter in January.

Nomadically Yours,

Tony Fairbairn
Hibiscus Nationals 2012 Co-coordinator.
