| Organizer Kim van Zyl with Lize van der Merwe (Reach for a Dream), O Strydom, Dirk Moraal and Frank van Zyl. (apologies R de Wit) (93 pts) |

The Reach For A Dream Foundation, an organisation that has brought hope and healing to countless young South Africans, believes strongly in the power of dreams. It encourages children of all income groups and of any race, colour or creed between the ages of 3 and 18 years to use their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and leukemia, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, kidney failure and HIV infections.
The word "terminal" is taboo in the life of Reach For A Dream. "Life-threatening" is more accurate simply because so many of our dream children do survive their illness, even if it means they are in remission and have to go for regular check-ups. The reason is simple - most children haven't learnt what life-threatening means. They live each day as it is given to them. For these children attitude is everything and they need all the encouragement they can get.
The dreams they receive are diverse - for in every child there is a powerful dreamer. Often it's to fulfil a simple wish - to go fishing with Dad or a doll to play with. Sometimes it's a flight to another city, to hug and kiss a dolphin, sometimes just a flight in an air balloon - but always it's a flight of fantasy that has been made to come true by generous donors, for kids committed to combat their illness.
Reaching For The Stars
Reach For A Dream had its beginnings in the fertile mind of its founder, Owen Parnell, who had been inspired by an article about the USA's Make A Wish Foundation. He roped in the assistance of a number of service organisations, and on July 7, 1988, the foundation made its first dream come true. On that day "JC" Steinman of Johannesburg was treated to rides on a pony and a motorcycle for his birthday.
Since that first dream, Reach For A Dream has fulfilled the dreams of more than 6300 children. On average three dreams are fulfilled each day and five outings arranged each weekend nationally. In essence, they bring joy and smiles to the lives of more than 527 children every month through our dream projects.
Fulfilling dreams enables children to experience the reality of a life for which they often yearn. The positive effect of the "dream come true" lingers, and children often respond better to their medication.
Realising each dream they receive is the most precious gift those at Reach For A Dream can give our children.
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." -Eleanor Roosevelt
I hope you share my passion for this organization and will help me to make a difference to these childrens’ lives.
I urge you to make an effort to participate in this day and if you can offer anything in the line of prizes or sponsoring of a hole, I would really appreciate hearing from you. These kids need our support. !!
So……………… together let’s make it happen.
If there are any questions, suggestions, offers of any sort, please contact me on 082 557 3842 or kim@proteas.co.za
I look forward to hearing from you
